Jan Chełmiński, noto anche come Jan van Chelminski, nato Jan Władysław Chełmiński, era un pittore polacco. Chełmiński si iscrisse all'Accademia delle Belle Arti di Monaco il 14 aprile 1875 (registro: 3144) e lavorò in tutta Europa. Dal 1895 visse a New York, sebbene avesse ottenuto la cittadinanza britannica nel 1893. Si sposò due volte. Dopo aver divorziato dalla sua prima moglie, Marie Henschel (1858–?), sposò Leonie Knoedler, sorella di Roland Knoedler, della famosa galleria d'arte newyorkese Knoedler. Chełmiński era soprattutto noto in vita per le sue opere storiche, in particolare quelle che trattavano di storia militare e delle guerre napoleoniche.
