Goeree fue pintor, dibujante, grabador y aguafortista. Era hijo de Willem Goeree, un teórico del arte neerlandés que realizó un estudio exhaustivo de las diversas técnicas necesarias para convertirse en un gran artista: dibujo, conocimientos de arquitectura, perspectiva, anatomía, composición, imaginación, color y sombreado, todas las cuales su hijo dominaba claramente.
