Era figlio di Willem Goeree, un teorico dell'arte olandese che condusse un'indagine completa sulle varie tecniche necessarie per diventare un grande artista: disegno, conoscenze architettoniche, prospettiva, anatomia, composizione, immaginazione, colore e chiaroscuro, tutte chiaramente padroneggiate da suo figlio.
