Pintor histórico polonês
Jan Alojzy Matejko foi um pintor polonês, um dos principais expoentes da pintura histórica do século XIX, conhecido por retratar eventos cruciais da história da Polônia. Suas obras incluem pinturas a óleo de grande escala, como Rejtan (1866), a União de Lublin (1869), O Astrônomo Copérnico ou Conversas com Deus (1873) e a Batalha de Grunwald (1878). Ele foi autor de numerosos retratos, de uma galeria de monarcas poloneses em formato de livro e de murais na Basílica de Santa Maria, em Cracóvia. É considerado por muitos o pintor polonês mais célebre e, às vezes, o «pintor nacional» da Polônia. Matejko estava entre as pessoas notáveis que receberam uma carta não solicitada do filósofo alemão Friedrich Nietzsche, enquanto este último mergulhava em um colapso psicótico em janeiro de 1889, em Turim. Matejko passou a maior parte de sua vida em Cracóvia. Seus professores na Academia de Belas Artes de Cracóvia incluíram Wojciech Korneli Stattler e Władysław Łuszczkiewicz. Mais tarde, tornou-se diretor da instituição, que com o tempo foi renomeada para Academia de Belas Artes Jan Matejko. Vários de seus alunos tornaram-se artistas proeminentes por mérito próprio, incluindo Maurycy Gottlieb, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Mehoffer e Stanisław Wyspiański. Ele é considerado o «Pai» do movimento de Artes e Ofícios da Jovem Polônia na Polônia.
