Pintor retratista y crítico holandés

Jan Pieter Veth fue un pintor, poeta, crítico de arte y profesor universitario neerlandés. Es especialmente conocido como pintor de retratos. Entre sus modelos se encontraban Max Liebermann, Lambertus Zijl, Frank van der Goes, Antoon Derkinderen y otros contemporáneos, incluidos varios colegas pintores. Jan Veth era hijo de Gerradus Huibert Veth, un comerciante de hierro y político liberal de Dordrecht, y de Anna Cornelia Giltay. Por parte materna, descendía de la familia de pintores Van Strij de Dordrecht (su madre era nieta de Jacob van Strij). Se casó con Anna Dorothea Dirks el 10 de agosto de 1888, matrimonio del que nacieron cinco hijos. Veth received his art education at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He was living in the area, called de Pijp. With several of his fellow students he founded the St. Luke group. From 1885 he worked with the painter Anton Mauve in Laren. After his marriage he settled in Bussum. In addition he was a well-known poet, belonging to The Movement of 1880 and publishing work in the De Nieuwe Gids. He designed the cover for "De Kleine Johannes", a book written by his friend, Frederik van Eeden, contributing to the development of book-art in the Netherlands. He was involved in the founding of "Genootschap Amstelodamum" and "Vereniging Hendrick de Keyser". As Professor Extraordinary in History of Art and Aesthetics (1906), he was associated with the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Veth fue miembro de la Real Academia Neerlandesa de Artes y Ciencias desde 1923. En 1923 se mudó de nuevo a Ámsterdam y vivió en Keizersgracht 327. Veth falleció en un hospital.
