Johann Carl Loth

Johann Carl Loth fue un pintor barroco alemán que pasó la mayor parte de su vida en Venecia. Su nombre también se escribe como Johann Karl, Karel y, en Italia, Carlotto o Carlo Lotti. Se especializó en pintura histórica, generalmente escenas de grupo abarrotadas. Sus temas solían provenir de la mitología clásica o del Antiguo Testamento. Nació en Múnich, Baviera. Según el biógrafo Arnold Houbraken, fue uno de los tres grandes maestros del arte llamados «Karel» o «Carl» (los otros dos eran Karel Dujardin y Karel Marat, generalmente llamado Carlo Maratta). Era hijo y discípulo de Johann Ulrich Loth y posiblemente fue influenciado por Giovan Battista Langetti. En una ocasión recibió el encargo de pintar para el emperador Leopoldo I en Viena y trabajó junto a Pietro Liberi en Venecia, donde vivió desde 1663 hasta su muerte en 1698. Su hermano Franz (1639–1710) también fue pintor en Venecia y Alemania y colaboraba a menudo con Carl. Tuvo numerosos alumnos, entre ellos Michael Wenzel Halbax [de], Santo Prunati, Johann Michael Rottmayr, Hans Adam Weissenkircher, Daniel Seiter y el barón Peter Strudel. Atrajo a artistas acomodados, como Cornelis de Bruijn y Jan van Bunnik, quienes realizaron viajes especialmente para visitar su estudio. Willem Drost y Jan Vermeer van Utrecht estaban entre sus amigos cercanos. Está enterrado en la iglesia de San Luca, en Venecia.
