Johann Carl Loth

Johann Carl Loth fu un pittore barocco tedesco che trascorse la maggior parte della sua vita a Venezia. Il suo nome è riportato anche come Johann Karl, Karel e, in Italia, Carlotto o Carlo Lotti. Si specializzò nella pittura storica, generalmente scene di gruppo affollate. I suoi soggetti erano tipicamente tratti dalla mitologia classica o dall'Antico Testamento. Nacque a Monaco di Baviera, in Baviera. Secondo il biografo Arnold Houbraken, fu uno dei tre grandi maestri dell'arte chiamati «Karel» o «Carl» (gli altri due erano Karel Dujardin e Karel Marat, solitamente chiamato Carlo Maratta). Era figlio e allievo di Johann Ulrich Loth e fu probabilmente influenzato da Giovan Battista Langetti. Una volta ricevette l'incarico di dipingere per l'imperatore Leopoldo I a Vienna e lavorò insieme a Pietro Liberi a Venezia, dove visse dal 1663 fino alla sua morte nel 1698. Suo fratello Franz (1639–1710) era anch'egli pittore a Venezia e in Germania e collaborava spesso con Carl. Ebbe numerosi allievi, tra cui Michael Wenzel Halbax [de], Santo Prunati, Johann Michael Rottmayr, Hans Adam Weissenkircher, Daniel Seiter e il barone Peter Strudel. Attirò artisti benestanti, come Cornelis de Bruijn e Jan van Bunnik, che intrapresero viaggi appositamente per visitare il suo studio. Willem Drost e Jan Vermeer van Utrecht erano tra i suoi amici intimi. È sepolto nella chiesa di San Luca, a Venezia.
