Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein

Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, connu sous le nom de Goethe Tischbein, était un peintre allemand appartenant à la famille d'artistes Tischbein. Son père, Johann Conrad (1712–1778), était menuisier au couvent de Haina. Il commença ses études artistiques avec son oncle, Johann Jacob Tischbein à Hambourg. De 1772 à 1773, il voyagea aux Pays-Bas pour étudier les maîtres anciens. Après 1777, il s'établit comme peintre de portraits à Berlin et devint membre de la loge maçonnique. Il put visiter Rome en 1779 et poursuivre ses études grâce à une bourse de la Kunsthochschule de Cassel. Pendant cette période, son style évolua du rococo au classicisme. Lorsqu'il manqua d'argent en 1781, il s'installa à Zurich. En 1783, il put retourner à Rome grâce à une subvention du duc Ernest II, obtenue sur la recommandation de Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, à qui il avait été présenté par Johann Kaspar Lavater. Il resta en Italie jusqu'en 1799 et devint ami avec Goethe, voyageant avec lui à Naples en 1787. Durant les dix dernières années passées là-bas, il fut directeur de l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli. Il partit après l'occupation française, lorsque la République parthénopéenne antimonarchiste fut établie. Après 1808, il travailla pour le grand-duc Pierre Ier. À partir de ce moment et jusqu'à sa mort, il résida à Eutin. Il passa plusieurs années après 1810 à écrire son autobiographie, « Aus meinem Leben ». Celle-ci ne fut publiée qu'en 1861 et n'a jamais été rééditée depuis. Son fils, Peter Friedrich Ludwig Tischbein, était un forestier et naturaliste renommé.
