John Augustus Atkinson

John Augustus Atkinson era un artista, incisore e acquerellista inglese. Atkinson nacque a Londra. Nel 1784 si recò a San Pietroburgo dallo zio James Walker, incisore dell'imperatrice Caterina la Grande. Lì studiò nelle gallerie d'arte, incoraggiato da Caterina e da suo figlio Paolo I, e fu incaricato da Paolo di dipingere grandi quadri sulla storia russa. Nel 1801, Atkinson tornò in Inghilterra e nel 1803 pubblicò Una rappresentazione pittoresca dei modi, costumi e divertimenti dei russi, con 100 tavole disegnate e incise da lui stesso. Dipinse anche acquerelli e nel 1808 fu eletto nella Society of Painters in Water Colours. Molte delle sue opere durante le guerre napoleoniche ebbero come soggetto temi navali. Dipinse molte scene di battaglia, inclusa una Battaglia di Waterloo, che fu incisa da John Burnet. Il suo ultimo contributo alla mostra della Royal Academy fu nel 1829. Morì il 25 marzo 1830 a Londra. Il suo testamento era datato 1830.
