ジョン・オーガスタス・アトキンソン
ロシア風俗と海戦を描く
ジョン・オーガスタス・アトキンソンは、イギリスの芸術家、版画家、水彩画家でした。 アトキンソンはロンドンで生まれた。1784年、彼はサンクトペテルブルクへ行き、エカチェリーナ大帝の彫刻師であった叔父のジェームズ・ウォーカーを頼った。そこで彼はエカチェリーナとその息子パーヴェル1世の励ましを受けながら絵画館で学び、パーヴェルからロシア史の大規模な絵画制作を委嘱された。 1801年、アトキンソンはイギリスに戻り、1803年には『ロシア人の作法、慣習、娯楽の絵画的表現』を出版した。この作品は100枚の版画で構成され、すべて彼自身が描き、エッチングを施した。彼はまた水彩画も手がけ、1808年には水彩画家協会に選出された。ナポレオン戦争期間中、彼の作品の多くは海軍を題材としたものであった。彼は多くの戦闘場面を描き、その中にはジョン・バーネットによって版画化された『ワーテルローの戦い』も含まれている。 ロイヤル・アカデミー展への彼の最後の出品は1829年でした。彼は1830年3月25日にロンドンで死去しました。彼の遺言状の日付は1830年です。
