John Cawse
Retratista y caricaturista británico
John Cawse fue un pintor y caricaturista británico. Nació el 25 de diciembre de 1778, hijo de Charles Woodruffe Cawse y su esposa Mary, residentes en Little Prescott Street, Whitechapel. Su padre se describía en su testamento como «fabricante de corsés y comerciante de barbas de ballena». Al comienzo de su carrera, fue contratado por el editor de estampas SW Fores para dibujar caricaturas. Expuso en la Royal Academy desde 1802, mostrando principalmente retratos, pero también algunas pinturas de caballos y, desde principios de la década de 1830, algunos cuadros históricos. Entre 1807 y 1845 expuso en la British Institution, presentando predominantemente temas literarios e históricos, incluyendo escenas de las obras de Shakespeare y Walter Scott. Su retrato del payaso Joseph Grimaldi forma parte de la colección de la National Portrait Gallery y su pintura de Carl Maria von Weber de 1826 se encuentra en la del Royal College of Music. Es recordado principalmente por su libro El arte de pintar retratos, paisajes, animales, pañerías, etc., al óleo, publicado en 1840. Era un músico aficionado que, de manera inusual para la época, tocaba la antigua viola da gamba (es decir, la viola baja); un instrumento que poseyó en el pasado se encuentra en el Museo Victoria y Alberto. Se casó con Mary Fraser; dos de sus hijas, Mary y Harriet Cawse, se convirtieron en cantantes de ópera; otra, Clarissa Sabina, era pintora de miniaturas
