John Cawse
Brits portret- en karikatuurschilder
John Cawse was een Britse schilder en karikaturist. Hij werd geboren op 25 december 1778, als zoon van Charles Woodruffe Cawse en zijn vrouw Mary, wonende aan Little Prescott Street, Whitechapel. Zijn vader beschreef zichzelf in zijn testament als een «korsetmaker en handelaar in walvisbaarden». Aan het begin van zijn carrière werd hij door de prentuitgever SW Fores ingehuurd om karikaturen te tekenen. Hij exposeerde vanaf 1802 bij de Royal Academy, waarbij hij voornamelijk portretten toonde, maar ook enkele schilderijen van paarden en, vanaf het begin van de jaren 1830, een paar historische werken. Tussen 1807 en 1845 exposeerde hij bij de British Institution, waarbij hij voornamelijk literaire en historische onderwerpen presenteerde, inclusief scènes uit de werken van Shakespeare en Walter Scott. Zijn portret van de clown Joseph Grimaldi maakt deel uit van de collectie van de National Portrait Gallery en zijn schilderij uit 1826 van Carl Maria von Weber bevindt zich in die van het Royal College of Music. Hij wordt het best herinnerd om zijn boek De kunst van het schilderen van portretten, landschappen, dieren, draperieën, enz., in olieverf, gepubliceerd in 1840. Hij was een amateurmuzikant die, ongebruikelijk voor die tijd, de ouderwetse viola da gamba (dat wil zeggen de basviol) bespeelde; een instrument dat hij ooit bezat, bevindt zich in het Victoria and Albert Museum. Hij trouwde met Mary Fraser; twee van hun dochters, Mary en Harriet Cawse, werden operazangeressen; een andere, Clarissa Sabina, was een miniatuurschilder
