John Cawse
Retratista e caricaturista britânico
John Cawse foi um pintor e caricaturista britânico. Ele nasceu em 25 de dezembro de 1778, filho de Charles Woodruffe Cawse e de sua esposa Mary, residentes na Little Prescott Street, Whitechapel. Seu pai descrevia-se em seu testamento como «fabricante de espartilhos e comerciante de barbatanas de baleia». No início de sua carreira, foi contratado pelo editor de gravuras SW Fores para desenhar caricaturas. Exibiu na Royal Academy a partir de 1802, mostrando principalmente retratos, mas também algumas pinturas de cavalos e, desde o início da década de 1830, alguns quadros históricos. Entre 1807 e 1845, exibiu na British Institution, apresentando predominantemente temas literários e históricos, incluindo cenas das obras de Shakespeare e Walter Scott. Seu retrato do palhaço Joseph Grimaldi faz parte da coleção da National Portrait Gallery e sua pintura de Carl Maria von Weber de 1826 está na do Royal College of Music. Ele é mais lembrado por seu livro A Arte de Pintar Retratos, Paisagens, Animais, Drapeados, etc., em cores a óleo, publicado em 1840. Era um músico amador que, incomumente para a época, tocava a antiquada viola da gamba (ou seja, o violão baixo); um instrumento que ele possuía está no Museu Victoria and Albert. Ele se casou com Mary Fraser; duas de suas filhas, Mary e Harriet Cawse, tornaram-se cantoras de ópera; outra, Clarissa Sabina, era pintora de miniaturas
