約翰·考斯
英國肖像畫家兼諷刺漫畫家
約翰·考斯是一位英國畫家和漫畫家。 他於1778年12月25日出生，是查爾斯·伍德拉夫·考斯與其妻子瑪麗的兒子，家住白教堂區小普雷斯科特街。他的父親在遺囑中自稱為「緊身胸衣製造商及鯨鬚商人」。 職業生涯早期，他受印刷出版商SW Fores僱用繪製漫畫。自1802年起，他在皇家藝術學院展出作品，主要展示肖像畫，也有一些馬匹題材的畫作，並從19世紀30年代初開始展出少量歷史題材畫作。1807年至1845年間，他在英國藝術學會展出作品，主要以文學和歷史題材為主，包括莎士比亞和華特·司各特作品中的場景。他繪製的小丑約瑟夫·格里馬爾迪的肖像現藏於國家肖像館，而他於1826年創作的卡爾·馬利亞·馮·韋伯的肖像則藏於皇家音樂學院。 他最為人銘記的是其於1840年出版的《用油彩繪製肖像、風景、動物、織物等的繪畫藝術》一書。他是一位業餘音樂家，在當時不同尋常地演奏著古老的維奧爾琴（即低音維奧爾琴）；他曾擁有的一把該樂器現藏於維多利亞和艾伯特博物館。 他娶了瑪麗·弗雷澤；他們的兩個女兒瑪麗和哈麗特·考斯成為了歌劇演唱家；另一個女兒克拉麗莎·薩比娜是一位微型畫家
