John Elliott
Epische symbolistische Wandmalerei
John Elliott war ein Künstler, Illustrator und Wandermaler. Er wurde in Lincolnshire, England, geboren und studierte in Paris an der Académie Julian bei Carolus-Duran. 1878 ging er nach Rom, um bei José Villegas Cordero zu studieren, und lernte dort seine zukünftige Frau Maud Howe kennen, eine mit dem Pulitzer-Preis ausgezeichnete amerikanische Schriftstellerin und Tochter von Julia Ward Howe, der Autorin von „The Battle Hymn of the Republic“. Elliott ist bekannt für seine epischen symbolistischen Wandgemälde, darunter die Zusammenarbeit mit seinem Freund und Kollegen John Singer Sargent an Wandgemälden für die Boston Public Library sowie die Schaffung eines Wandgemäldes im Nationalmuseum (heute das Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History).
