John Emms
Famoso per dipinti di cavalli e cani
John Emms era un artista inglese. Emms nacque a Blofield, nel Norfolk, figlio dell'artista Henry William Emms. Divenne un avido cacciatore e divenne famoso per i suoi dipinti di cavalli e cani, in particolare foxhound e terrier. Espose alla Royal Academy diverse volte, a partire dal 1866. I suoi dipinti sono firmati “Jno Emms”. Sposò Fanny Primmer di Lyndhurst, Hampshire, nel 1880. La coppia visse a Londra per un periodo, ma tornò a Lyndhurst nel 1881 e costruì una grande casa e studio chiamata The Firs, dove Emms visse per il resto della sua vita. Morì a Lyndhurst. Il suo dipinto di "Callum", un Dandie Dinmont Terrier, è appeso alla National Gallery of Scotland. Nel 1919, il proprietario del cane, James Cowan Smith, donò 55.000 sterline (2.500.000 sterline nel 2019) alla National Gallery of Scotland con la condizione che il dipinto fosse esposto sulle sue pareti in perpetuo.
