John Henry Bufford was een lithograaf in het 19e-eeuwse Boston, Massachusetts. Bufford werd opgeleid "in de winkel van Pendleton in Boston van 1829 tot 1831." In 1835 verhuisde hij naar New York, waar hij „vijf jaar onafhankelijk werkte terwijl hij opdrachten van George Endicott en Nathaniel Currier aannam". Bufford keerde in 1839 terug naar Boston en werd „hoofdkunstenaar" in de drukkerij van Benjamin W. Thayer (die het Pendleton-team had gekocht). In 1844 veranderde de naam van de winkel in J.H. Bufford & Co. (1844–1851). Volgens een beoordeling „produceerde het bedrijf van Bufford levendige, bekwaame afbeeldingen in vele vormen, waaronder bladmuziek, stadsgezichten, zeegezichten en landschappen, boekillustraties, reproducties van schilderijen, commerciële weergaven van fabrieken en contemporaine genrescènes; ... [en] lithografische portretten gekopieerd van daguerreotypieën." Kunstenaars die voor Bufford werkten, waren onder andere Francis D'Avignon, Winslow Homer en Leopold Grozelier. Klanten omvatten muziekuitgever William H. Oakes. Na de dood van Bufford in 1870 zetten zijn zonen Frank G. Bufford en John Henry Bufford Jr. het bedrijf voort. In 1879 werkte 'J.H. Bufford's Sons, productie-uitgevers van noviteiten in de schone kunsten' vanuit kantoren aan 141-147 Franklin Street in Boston; en tussen 1881 en 1882 breidde het bedrijf uit tot New York en Chicago.
