John Inigo Richards

John Inigo Richards RA fu un paesaggista britannico che divenne uno dei membri fondatori della Royal Academy nel 1768 e fu segretario dell'Accademia dal 1788 fino alla sua morte. Studiò arte alla St Martin's Lane Academy di Londra, dove fu allievo di George Lambert (1700–1765), talvolta considerato il «padre della pittura paesaggistica inglese a olio». Come il suo contemporaneo Francis Hayman, Richards lavorò come pittore di scene nei teatri di Londra (1777–1803). Conservò per tutta la vita un interesse per il design teatrale. Gli viene attribuita la progettazione del Chestnut Street Theatre a Filadelfia. (Il primo teatro professionale costruito appositamente negli Stati Uniti, aperto nel 1793), costruito per suo cognato Thomas Wignell. Quando Richards morì nel 1810, riconobbe che Mary Ann Ritchards, nata dall'attrice Ann Pitt nel 1759, era sua figlia. Le lasciò una scatola da tabacco da fiuto decorata con un'immagine di sua madre e della sua ex amante.
