John Leech
Britischer Satire-Illustrator-Pionier
John Leech war ein britischer Karikaturist und Illustrator. Er war am besten bekannt für seine Arbeit für Punch, ein humorvolles Magazin für ein breites Publikum der Mittelschicht, das verbale und grafische politische Satire mit leichter gesellschaftlicher Komödie verband. Leech bediente zeitgenössische Vorurteile wie Antiamerikanismus und Antisemitismus und unterstützte akzeptable Sozialreformen. Leechs kritische, aber humorvolle Karikaturen über den Krimkrieg halfen, die Haltung der Öffentlichkeit gegenüber Heldentum, Kriegsführung und der Rolle der Briten in der Welt zu prägen. Leech ist auch als erster Illustrator der 1843 erschienenen Kurzgeschichte Eine Weihnachtsgeschichte von Charles Dickens bekannt. Zudem war er ein Pionier der Comics und schuf die wiederkehrende Figur Mr. Briggs sowie einige sequenzielle illustrierte Gags.
