John Leech
Illustrateur satirique britannique pionnier
John Leech était un caricaturiste et illustrateur britannique. Il était surtout connu pour son travail pour Punch, un magazine humoristique destiné à un large public de la classe moyenne, combinant satire politique verbale et graphique avec une comédie sociale légère. Leech a satisfait aux préjugés contemporains, tels que l'anti-américanisme et l'antisémitisme, et a soutenu des réformes sociales acceptables. Les dessins critiques mais humoristiques de Leech sur la guerre de Crimée ont aidé à façonner l'attitude du public envers l'héroïsme, la guerre et le rôle des Britanniques dans le monde. Leech jouit également d'une certaine notoriété en tant que premier illustrateur de la nouvelle de Charles Dickens de 1843, Un chant de Noël. Il fut en outre un pionnier de la bande dessinée, créant le personnage récurrent Mr. Briggs ainsi que quelques gags illustrés séquentiels.
