John Leech
Pioniere illustratore satirico britannico
John Leech è stato un caricaturista e illustratore britannico. Era noto soprattutto per il suo lavoro per Punch, una rivista umoristica destinata a un vasto pubblico della classe media, che combinava satira politica verbale e grafica con una leggera commedia sociale. Leech assecondava i pregiudizi contemporanei, come l'antiamericanismo e l'antisemitismo, e sosteneva riforme sociali accettabili. Le vignette critiche ma umoristiche di Leech sulla guerra di Crimea hanno contribuito a plasmare l'atteggiamento del pubblico verso l'eroismo, la guerra e il ruolo dei britannici nel mondo. Leech è anche famoso per essere stato il primo illustratore del racconto del 1843 di Charles Dickens, Canto di Natale. È stato inoltre un pioniere dei fumetti, creando il personaggio ricorrente Mr. Briggs e alcune battute illustrate sequenziali.
