ジョン・リーチ
英国風刺画の先駆者
ジョン・リーチは、英国の風刺画家でありイラストレーターでした。彼は、広範な中産階級を読者層とするユーモア雑誌『パンチ』への寄稿で最もよく知られており、言葉と絵による政治風刺と軽快な社会喜劇を融合させていました。リーチは反米主義や反ユダヤ主義といった当時の偏見に迎合し、容認できる社会改革を支持しました。クリミア戦争に関するリーチの批判的でありながらユーモアを含んだ漫画は、英雄主義、戦争、そして世界における英国人の役割に対する世論の形成に貢献しました。 リーチは、チャールズ・ディケンズの1843年の中編小説『クリスマス・キャロル』の最初の挿絵画家としても有名です。さらに彼はコミックの先駆者でもあり、レギュラーキャラクターのブリッグス氏や、いくつかの連続したイラストギャグを創作しました。
