John Leech
Britse satirische illustratiepionier
John Leech was een Britse karikaturist en illustrator. Hij was het meest bekend om zijn werk voor Punch, een humoristisch tijdschrift voor een breed publiek uit de middenklasse, dat verbale en grafische politieke satire combineerde met lichte sociale komedie. Leech speelde in op contemporaine vooroordelen, zoals anti-Amerikanisme en antisemitisme, en steunde acceptabele sociale hervormingen. Leech's kritische maar humoristische spotprenten over de Krimoorlog hielpen de houding van het publiek ten opzichte van heldendom, oorlogvoering en de rol van de Britten in de wereld vorm te geven. Leech is ook bekend als de eerste illustrator van Charles Dickens' novelle Een kerstvertelling uit 1843. Hij was daarnaast een pionier in strips en creëerde het terugkerende personage Mr. Briggs en enkele sequentiële geïllustreerde gags.
