John Leech
Ilustrador satírico britânico pioneiro
John Leech foi um caricaturista e ilustrador britânico. Era mais conhecido pelo seu trabalho para a Punch, uma revista humorística para um amplo público de classe média, combinando sátira política verbal e gráfica com comédia social leve. Leech apaziguou preconceitos contemporâneos, como o antiamericanismo e o antissemitismo, e apoiou reformas sociais aceitáveis. As caricaturas críticas, mas humorísticas de Leech sobre a Guerra da Crimeia ajudaram a moldar as atitudes do público em relação ao heroísmo, à guerra e ao papel dos britânicos no mundo. Leech também desfruta de fama como o primeiro ilustrador da novela de 1843 de Charles Dickens, Um Conto de Natal. Ele foi, ademais, um pioneiro nas histórias em quadrinhos, criando o personagem recorrente Mr. Briggs e algumas piadas ilustradas sequenciais.
