John Rubens Smith

John Rubens Smith war ein in London geborener Maler, Grafiker und Kunstlehrer, der in den Vereinigten Staaten tätig war. Smith wurde in London, England, geboren, wo er zunächst bei seinem Vater, dem Mezzotinto-Stecher John Raphael Smith, Kunst studierte. Später studierte er an der Royal Academy Kunst. Smith wanderte um 1807 von London nach New York City aus. Er stellte die Vereinigten Staaten in den Jahrzehnten vor der Erfindung der Fotografie dar und beeinflusste durch seine Zeichenschulen und Zeichenhandbücher eine Generation amerikanischer Künstler. Er starb in New York City. Sein Sohn John Rowson Smith (1810–1864) war ein Maler von beweglichen Panoramen, der mit Richard Risley Carlisle zusammenarbeitete.
