John Rubens Smith

John Rubens Smith était un peintre, graveur et professeur d'art né à Londres, qui a travaillé aux États-Unis. Smith est né à Londres, en Angleterre, où il a d'abord étudié l'art avec son père, John Raphael Smith, un graveur en manière noire. Il a ensuite étudié l'art à la Royal Academy. Smith a émigré à New York depuis Londres vers 1807. Il a dépeint les États-Unis dans les décennies qui ont précédé l'invention de la photographie et a influencé une génération d'artistes américains grâce à ses académies de dessin et à ses manuels de dessin. Il est mort à New York. Son fils John Rowson Smith (1810–1864) était un peintre de panoramas mobiles qui a travaillé avec Richard Risley Carlisle.
