John Rubens Smith

John Rubens Smith era un pittore, incisore e insegnante d'arte nato a Londra, che ha lavorato negli Stati Uniti. Smith nacque a Londra, in Inghilterra, dove inizialmente studiò arte con il padre, John Raphael Smith, un incisore alla mezzatinta. In seguito studiò arte presso la Royal Academy. Smith emigrò a New York da Londra intorno al 1807. Rappresentò gli Stati Uniti nei decenni precedenti l'avvento della fotografia e influenzò una generazione di artisti americani attraverso le sue accademie di disegno e i suoi manuali di disegno. Morì a New York. Suo figlio John Rowson Smith (1810–1864) era un pittore di panorami mobili che lavorò con Richard Risley Carlisle.
