John Rubens Smith

John Rubens Smith was een in Londen geboren schilder, prentmaker en kunstdocent die in de Verenigde Staten werkte. Smith werd geboren in Londen, Engeland, waar hij aanvankelijk kunst studeerde bij zijn vader, John Raphael Smith, een mezzotint-graveur. Later studeerde hij kunst aan de Royal Academy. Smith emigreerde rond 1807 van Londen naar New York. Hij beeldde de Verenigde Staten af in de decennia voorafgaand aan de fotografie en beïnvloedde een generatie Amerikaanse kunstenaars door zijn tekenacademies en tekenhandleidingen. Hij overleed in New York. Zijn zoon John Rowson Smith (1810–1864) was een schilder van bewegende panorama's die samenwerkte met Richard Risley Carlisle.
