John Webber

John Webber RA foi um artista inglês que acompanhou o capitão Cook em sua terceira expedição ao Pacífico. Ele é mais conhecido por suas imagens da Australásia, do Havaí e do Alasca. Webber nasceu em Londres, foi educado em Berna e estudou pintura em Paris. O seu pai era Abraham Wäber, um escultor suíço que se havia mudado para Londres e mudou o seu nome para Webber antes de se casar com uma Mrs Mary Quant em 1744. Webber serviu como artista oficial na terceira viagem de descoberta de James Cook pelo Pacífico (1776–1880) a bordo do HMS Resolution. Em Adventure Bay em janeiro de 1777, ele fez desenhos de "Um Homem de Van Diemen's Land" e "Uma Mulher de Van Diemen's Land". Ele também fez muitos desenhos de cenários na Nova Zelândia e nas ilhas do Pacífico Sul. Nesta viagem, durante a qual Cook perdeu a vida em uma luta no Havaí, Webber tornou-se o primeiro artista europeu a fazer contato com o Havaí, então chamado de Ilhas Sandwich. Ele fez numerosas paisagens em aquarela das ilhas de Kauai e Havaí, e também retratou muitos dos havaianos. Em abril de 1778, os navios do capitão Cook, Resolution e Discovery, ancoraram em Ship Cove, hoje conhecido como Nootka Sound, Ilha de Vancouver, Canadá, para se reequipar. A tripulação fez observações e registrou os encontros com o povo local. Webber fez paisagens em aquarela, incluindo "Resolution e Discovery em Ship Cove, 1778". Seus desenhos e pinturas foram gravados para o relatório do Almirantado Britânico sobre a expedição, que foi publicado em 1784. De volta à Inglaterra em 1780, Webber exibiu cerca de 50 obras nas exposições da Royal Academy entre 1784 e 1792, e foi eleito associado da Royal Academy em 1785 e R.A. em 1791. A maior parte de seu trabalho era de paisagens. Às vezes, figuras eram incluídas, como em "A Party from H.M.S. Resolution shooting sea horses", que foi mostrada na academia em 1784, e sua "The Death of Captain Cook" tornou-se conhecida através de uma gravura dela.
