John Young
Maître du mézzotinte et gestionnaire
John Young, graveur en manière noire et conservateur de la British Institution, est né en 1755 et a étudié sous la direction de John Raphael Smith. Il devint un graveur très compétent, travaillant exclusivement en manière noire, et réalisa environ quatre-vingts portraits de personnalités contemporaines d'après des tableaux de Hoppner, Lawrence, Zoffany, etc., ainsi que quelques œuvres de genre d'après Morland, Hoppner, Paye et d'autres. Sa plus belle plaque est le combat de boxe entre Broughton et Stevenson, d'après Mortimer. En 1789, il fut nommé graveur en manière noire du prince de Galles. En 1813, Young succéda à Valentine Green au poste de conservateur de la British Institution, une charge ardue qu'il occupa avec un tact et une efficacité infaillibles jusqu'à sa mort. He was honorary secretary of the Artists' Benevolent Fund from 1810 to 1813, and then transferred his services in the same capacity to the rival body, the Artists' General Benevolent Institution. He died at his house in Upper Charlotte Street, Fitzroy Square, London, on 7 March 1825. Young published in 1815 "Portraits of the Emperors of Turkey from the Foundation of the Monarchy to the year 1808", thirty plates printed in colours, with English and French text; and between 1821 and 1825 a series of catalogues, illustrated with etchings by himself, of the Grosvenor, Leicester, Miles, Angerstein, and Stafford galleries.
