Mystieke Oostenrijkse landschappen en oriëntalisme
Josef Thoma the Younger was an Austrian painter best known for his landscapes of rural Austria. Painted in the style of Romantic artist such as Eugène Delacroix and Caspar David Friedrich, his work often processed a mystical quality, created by manipulating light and natural settings. For example, in his work Berglandschaft, which depicts a wooden cabin hidden between the mountain peak, the artist uses a dark, muted color palette, adding the air of mystery. Ook beïnvloed door de Europese interesse in het zogenaamde 'oriëntalisme', schilderde hij exotische landschappen van het Verre Oosten, zoals te zien is in zijn schilderij Tuin in Constantinopel. Thoma werd geboren in 1828 in Oostenrijk en overleed in 1899 in Oostenrijk.
