Joseph Barber

Pioniere del paesaggio e insegnamento a Birmingham

Joseph Barber era un pittore paesaggista inglese e insegnante d'arte, nonché uno dei primi membri della Scuola di paesaggio di Birmingham. Nato a Newcastle upon Tyne, Barber si trasferì a Birmingham negli anni 1770, dove lavorò dipingendo oggetti in cartapesta e prodotti laccati. Nel 1798, Barber fu nominato insegnante di disegno alla Free Grammar School di New Street, tenendo lezioni nel suo studio all'angolo tra Edmund Street e Newhall Street. Verso la metà degli anni 1780, era ormai affermato come il primo maestro di disegno della città, con un'accademia che formava artisti in Great Charles Street. Tra i suoi allievi vi erano David Cox, William Radclyffe e Samuel Lines, che avrebbe fondato la propria accademia in Newhall Street nel 1807. Barber aveva cinque figli. I suoi due figli, Vincent Barber e Charles Barber, si formarono entrambi come pittori nella sua accademia, con Vincent che ne assunse la direzione dopo la morte del padre nel 1811. Le sue figlie Maria, Eliza e Ann Matilda esposero anche dipinti e insegnarono a studenti privati. Ann Matilda era la madre del teologo e vescovo di Durham Joseph Barber Lightfoot. Charles e Vincent Barber, insieme all'ex allievo del più anziano dei Barber, Samuel Lines, fondarono nel 1809 un'accademia separata di disegno dal vero, che alla fine si evolse nella Royal Birmingham Society of Artists e nella Birmingham School of Art. Joseph Barber's own work consists largely of drawings and watercolours of rustic landscape scenes - including pictures of North Wales, which he was the first of many Birmingham artists to paint. His works feature in the collections of the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Samuel Lines wrote of him, 'He was a very talented artist of the old school. He drew the figure and painted landscape well. Most of his time was employed in teaching drawing, chiefly in Indian ink and tinted with colours - such was at that time the manner of making watercolour drawings'.
