Karl Russ es un pintor austriaco. Karl Russ estudió en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Viena y pintó principalmente escenas de la mitología, la antigüedad y representaciones de la historia austriaca. En 1806 trabajó en la Albertina. En 1810, fue pintor de corte de Jean-Baptiste d'Autriche y lo acompañó en paseos por Estiria para explorar la región y encontrar modelos para los cuadros que le encargaba. Capturó la ropa de la gente común del país con sus trajes estirios en una serie de acuarelas. Estas pinturas constituyen documentos importantes sobre la vestimenta tradicional entre 1810 y 1820, desde los vestidos de fiesta de las mujeres burguesas hasta la indumentaria de un niño campesino. Karl Russ es el padre del pintor Leander Russ.
