Kate Greenaway
Illustratrice vittoriana per bambini
Catherine Greenaway era un'artista e scrittrice britannica dell'epoca vittoriana, nota per le sue illustrazioni di libri per bambini. Ha ricevuto la sua formazione in grafica e arte tra il 1858 e il 1871 presso la South Kensington School of Art e la Royal Female School of Art, nonché la Slade School of Fine Art. Ha iniziato la sua carriera progettando per il crescente mercato delle carte di festa, producendo carte di Natale e di San Valentino. Nel 1879, l'incisore e stampatore in legno Edmund Evans ha stampato "Under the Window", un bestseller istantaneo che ha stabilito la sua reputazione. La sua collaborazione con Evans è continua attraverso gli anni '80 e '90. Le rappresentazioni di bambini vestiti con costumi immaginari dell'ottocento in uno stile regina Anna erano estremamente popolari in Inghilterra e internazionalmente, ispirando lo stile Kate Greenaway. Entro pochi anni dalla pubblicazione di Under the Window, l'opera di Greenaway fu imitata in Inghilterra, Germania e Stati Uniti.
