Katsushika Hokusai
Meister der Fuji-Holzschnitte
Katsushika Hokusai, einfach als Hokusai bekannt, war ein japanischer Künstler, Ukiyo-e-Maler und Grafiker der Edo-Zeit. In Edo (heute Tokio) geboren, ist Hokusai am besten als Autor der Holzschnittserie Sechsunddreißig Ansichten des Berges Fuji (富嶽三十六景, Fugaku Sanjūroku-kei, ca. 1831) bekannt, die den international ikonischen Druck Die große Welle vor Kanagawa enthält. Hokusai schuf die „Sechsunddreißig Ansichten des Berg Fuji“ sowohl als Reaktion auf einen einheimischen Reiseboom als auch im Rahmen einer persönlichen Obsession für den Berg Fuji. Es war diese Serie, insbesondere die Drucke „Die große Welle“ und „Morgendlicher Wind bei klarem Wetter“, die Hokusais Ruhm sowohl in Japan als auch im Ausland sicherte. Wie der Historiker Richard Lane schlussfolgert: „Wenn es ein Werk gibt, das Hokusais Namen sowohl in Japan als auch im Ausland bekannt gemacht hat, dann muss es diese monumentale Druckserie sein.“ Zwar sind Hokusais Werke vor dieser Serie sicherlich wichtig, doch erst mit dieser Serie erlangte er breite Anerkennung.
