Snow at the top of the Tsukuba Mountain in Hitachi Province by Katsushika Hokusai, 1817

Most people know Hokusai for his Great Wave or Mount Fuji, but here he tackles the twin-peaked Mount Tsukuba in Hitachi Province. This image is actually a double-page spread from an 1817 illustrated book, likely one of his famous sketchbooks. The mountain is draped in a thick coat of white snow, broken up by dark, jagged clusters of trees and rocks that look almost like ink blots. Those tiny pink dots scattered across the white slopes are a lovely touch, suggesting either falling petals or just the texture of the snow itself. It’s a serene, minimalist take on a famous landscape, showing how Hokusai could capture the grandeur of nature with just a few bold shapes.
