ローレンス・アルマ＝タデマ
ローマの贅沢を描く
ローレンス・アルマ・タデマ卿は、特別な英国国籍を持つオランダの画家でした。オランダのドロンリップで生まれ、ベルギーのアンテワープ王立美術院で訓練を受けた彼は、1870年にイギリスに定住し、残りの人生をそこで過ごしました。古典的テーマの画家として、彼はローマ帝国の贅沢と衰退を描写して有名になり、その人物は幻想的な大理石の内装や、眩しい地中海の青い海と空を背景に描かれました。アルマ・タデマはヴィクトリア朝の最も人気のある画家の一人とされていました。 彼の生涯において、その設計図と古典的な古代の描写により称賛されていたが、死去後は評価を失い、1960年代以降にのみ、19世紀のイギリス芸術におけるその重要性から再評価された。
