Martin Gerlach était un graveur, photographe et éditeur austro-allemand de renom. Gerlach a fondé sa maison d'édition portant son nom en 1872 à Berlin, qui se concentrait principalement sur les livres de prototypes et de modèles pour les artistes et les artisans. Ses travaux sur le prototypage photographique étaient particulièrement influents. Avec Ferdinand Schenk, il a ensuite fondé l'Institut d'art polygraphique à Vienne et a créé la maison d'édition Gerlach & Schenk. Pendant cette période, Gerlach a fait appel à plusieurs artistes émergents pour les illustrations de livres, dont le jeune Gustav Klimt. En 1901, le partenariat entre Gerlach et Schenk a pris fin. Il a ensuite réorganisé son entreprise et s'est associé à son employé de longue date, Alfred Wiedling, pour former Gerlach & Wiedling. Between 1901 and 1924, Gerlach published his delightful Jugendbücherei, a collection of 34 volumes of children's books. Each volume was 15x14cm, and combined contemporary artistry with popular fairytales and German legends. Gerlach commissioned well-known artists, such as Carl Otto Czeschka, Carl Fahringer, Franz Wacik, Ignaz Taschner, and others to illustrate and design each volume. Perhaps the most striking of these little gems (and this blogger's personal fave) is Die Nibelungen (1920), which the famed Austrian graphic artist, Carl Otto Czeschka, illustrated and designed with gold print. Ausgewählte gedichte von August Kopisch (1904), illustrated by Ferdinand Andri, is also a favorite, with it's weird little designs and mischievous creatures.
