Matthieu Elias
Pintor de retablos en Dunkerque
Matheiu Elias, también conocido como Elyas o Elie, nació en Peena, cerca de Cassel, en 1658. Sus padres eran extremadamente pobres, y de niño trabajaba cuidando el ganado. En esta humilde situación, fue observado por un pintor de Dunkerque llamado Philippe De Corbehem, mientras trazaba objetos en el suelo. El artista, impresionado por la singularidad de la circunstancia y la evidente disposición del niño, convenció a su madre para que se lo encomendara. Después de instruirlo durante algún tiempo, lo envió a París para perfeccionarse, donde encontró empleo y residió varios años. Tras la muerte de De Corbehem, se estableció en Dunkerque y pintó algunos retablos para las iglesias de esa ciudad y sus alrededores. Murió en Dunkerque en 1741.
