Matthieu Elias
Pittore di pale a Dunkerque
Matheiu Elias, noto anche come Elyas o Elie, nacque a Peena, vicino a Cassel, nel 1658. I suoi genitori erano estremamente poveri e, da bambino, era impiegato nella custodia del bestiame. In questa umile condizione, fu notato da un pittore di Dunkerque di nome Philippe De Corbehem, mentre tracciava oggetti sul terreno. L'artista, colpito dalla singolarità della circostanza e dall'evidente predisposizione del ragazzo, convinse sua madre ad affidarglielo. Dopo averlo istruito per qualche tempo, lo inviò a Parigi per perfezionarsi, dove trovò impiego e risiedette per diversi anni. Alla morte di De Corbehem, si stabilì a Dunkerque e dipinse alcune pale d'altare per le chiese di quella città e dei suoi dintorni. Morì a Dunkerque nel 1741.
