Mauro Antonio Tesi
Pionier van Italiaans neoclassicisme
Mauro Antonio Tesi, or, as he is sometimes called, after the name given him by his patron and admirer, Francesco Algarotti, "Il Maurino", was an Italian painter of the late-Baroque period, active mainly in Bologna. He is also considered an early proponent of the Neo-classical style. Hij werd geboren in Montalbano bij Modena. Hij was grotendeels autodidact en werkte als decoratief en architecturaal schilder in kerken en openbare en particuliere gebouwen in Bologna en Florence. In 1764 voltooide hij de fresco's aan het plafond van het schip van de kleine kerk van San Leone in Pistoia. Hij reisde met zijn compagnon Algarotti en illustreerde diens werken, en ontwierp het grafmonument op het Campo Santo in Pisa. Een van zijn leerlingen was Valentino Baldi. Hij stierf in Bologna twee jaar na Algarotti, naar verluidt ook aan tuberculose.
