マイケル・シーモア
英海軍提督・中国方面司令官
マイケル・シーモア卿、GCBは、後にポーツマス総司令官となったイギリス海軍の将校でした。 マイケル・シーモアは、初代準男爵である海軍大将サー・マイケル・シーモアの三男として生まれ、1813年に王立海軍に入隊した。1822年に中尉、1824年に司令官、1826年に大佐(艦長)に任じられた。1833年から1835年まで、測量船HMSチャレンジャーの艦長を務め、同船はチリ沖で座礁・沈没した。1841年にはHMSブリタニア、続いてHMSパワフルの指揮を執った。1845年にはHMSヴィンディクティブの艦長を引き継いだ。 1851年から1854年まで、彼はデボンポート造船所の准将監督官を務めた。1854年、クリミア戦争中、バルト海でチャールズ・ネイピア卿の麾下で従軍した。同年、海軍少将に昇進し、1855年に名誉提督リチャード・ダンダスの指揮下でバルト海作戦が再開されると、シーモアは副司令官となった。 1856年2月19日、彼は東インド・中国方面艦隊の司令長官に任命された。彼はHMSカルカッタに将旗を掲げ、イギリスの沿岸船アロー号への攻撃に起因する作戦を指揮した。中国でのアロー戦争(第二次アヘン戦争)中、彼は1856年11月の虎門の戦いを指揮し、1857年6月の仏山渓の戦いで中国艦隊の壊滅を支援し、同年12月に広州を占領し、さらに1858年には白河(海河)の砲台を攻略して清政府に天津条約への同意を余儀なくさせた。1859年、彼はバス勲章ナイト・グランド・クロス(GCB)を受章した。1859年から1863年まで、彼は自由党所属の下院議員としてデボンポート選挙区から選出された。1863年、彼はポーツマス司令長官に任命され、1866年までその職を務めた。1870年に引退した。 香港島のシーモア・ロードは彼にちなんで名付けられました。
