Michael Seymour
Britse admiraal en commandant in China
Admiraal Sir Michael Seymour, GCB was een officier van de Royal Navy die later opperbevelhebber in Portsmouth werd. Geboren als de derde zoon van admiraal Sir Michael Seymour, 1e baronet, trad Michael Seymour in 1813 toe tot de Royal Navy. Hij werd in 1822 benoemd tot luitenant, in 1824 tot commander en in 1826 tot kapitein. Van 1833 tot 1835 was hij kapitein van het opnameschip HMS Challenger, dat verging voor de kust van Chili. In 1841 kreeg hij het commando over de HMS Britannia en vervolgens over de HMS Powerful. In 1845 nam hij het commando over de HMS Vindictive over. Van 1851 tot 1854 was hij commodore-superintendent van de scheepswerf van Devonport. In 1854 diende hij onder Sir Charles Napier in de Oostzee tijdens de Krimoorlog. Hij werd datzelfde jaar gepromoveerd tot schout-bij-nacht en, toen de Oostzeecampagne in 1855 werd hervat onder admiraal de geëerde Richard Dundas, was Seymour de tweede in bevel. Op 19 februari 1856 werd hij benoemd tot opperbevelhebber van het Oost-Indië en China-station. Onder zijn vlag op de HMS Calcutta voerde hij operaties uit die voortvloeiden uit de aanval op de Britse kustvaarder Arrow. Tijdens de Arrow-oorlog in China commandeerde hij de Slag bij de Bogue in november 1856, hielp hij de Chinese vloot te vernietigen in de Slag bij Fatshan Creek in juni 1857, veroverde hij Kanton in december en nam hij in 1858 de forten aan de Baihe (Hai-rivier) in, waardoor de Chinese regering gedwongen werd het Verdrag van Tientsin te aanvaarden. In 1859 werd hij benoemd tot GCB. Van 1859 tot 1863 zat hij als liberaal lid van het Parlement voor Devonport. In 1863 werd hij benoemd tot opperbevelhebber van Portsmouth, een functie die hij tot 1866 bekleedde. Hij ging met pensioen in 1870. Seymour Road op Hongkong-eiland is naar hem vernoemd.
