Maestro de escenas bambocciantes
Michiel Sweerts o Michael Sweerts fue un pintor y grabador flamenco del período barroco, conocido por sus pinturas alegóricas y de género, retratos y tronies. El artista llevó una vida itinerante y trabajó en Roma, Bruselas, Ámsterdam, Persia e India (Goa). Durante su estancia en Roma, Sweerts se vinculó al grupo de pintores neerlandeses y flamencos conocidos como los Bamboccianti, especializados en escenas de la vida cotidiana de las clases bajas. Las contribuciones de Sweerts al género de los Bamboccianti muestran generalmente un mayor dominio estilístico y una mayor sensibilidad sociofilosófica que las de otros artistas que trabajaban en esta manera. Aunque tuvo éxito en vida, Sweerts y su obra cayeron en el olvido hasta que fue redescubierto en el siglo XX como uno de los artistas más intrigantes y enigmáticos de su tiempo.
