Michel Sweerts
Maître des scènes bambocciantes
Michiel Sweerts ou Michael Sweerts était un peintre et graveur flamand de la période baroque, connu pour ses peintures allégoriques et de genre, ses portraits et ses tronies. L'artiste a mené une vie itinérante et a travaillé à Rome, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, en Perse et en Inde (Goa). Pendant son séjour à Rome, Sweerts s'est associé au groupe de peintres néerlandais et flamands connus sous le nom de Bamboccianti, qui représentaient des scènes de la vie quotidienne des classes populaires. Les contributions de Sweerts au genre des Bamboccianti témoignent généralement d'une maîtrise stylistique et d'une sensibilité socio-philosophique plus grandes que celles des autres artistes travaillant dans cette manière. Bien qu'il ait connu le succès de son vivant, Sweerts et son œuvre sont tombés dans l'oubli jusqu'à ce qu'il soit redécouvert au XXe siècle comme l'un des artistes les plus fascinants et énigmatiques de son époque.
