Maestro delle scene bamboccianti
Michiel Sweerts o Michael Sweerts fu un pittore e incisore fiammingo del periodo barocco, noto per le sue pitture allegoriche e di genere, ritratti e tronies. L'artista condusse una vita itinerante e lavorò a Roma, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, in Persia e in India (Goa). Durante il suo soggiorno a Roma, Sweerts si legò al gruppo di pittori olandesi e fiamminghi noti come i Bamboccianti, specializzati in scene di vita popolare. I contributi di Sweerts al genere dei Bamboccianti mostrano generalmente una maggiore padronanza stilistica e una più alta sensibilità socio-filosofica rispetto agli altri artisti che lavoravano in questo stile. Sebbene abbia avuto successo in vita, Sweerts e la sua opera caddero nell'oblio fino a quando non fu riscoperto nel XX secolo come uno degli artisti più affascinanti ed enigmatici del suo tempo.
