光谷國四郎
日本洋畫先驅
光谷國四郎是一位日本洋畫風格畫家。 他的叔父堀田是一位商人，也是岡山最早創作西式繪畫的人之一。在初等教育期間，他展現出早期的藝術天賦，並被當時擔任代課教師的知名藝術家吉富淺次郎發掘。畢業後，他於1891年前往東京。次年，他開始在小山正太郎的私立學校「不同社」（大致意為「多樣性」）學習。 In 1900, he went to Europe to exhibit at the Exposition Universelle, won an award, and stayed there through 1901; taking a few lessons from Jean-Paul Laurens. Upon his return, he and some like-minded artists created "Pacific Art", an association devoted to Western-style painting. 1907年，他擔任文化部舉辦的首屆展覽的評審委員。同年稍後，他在東京府贊助的經濟發展博覽會上獲得一等獎。1911年，在大原孫三郎的資助下，他返回歐洲深造，並在那裡居住直至1914年第一次世界大戰爆發。 他於1925年被任命為日本藝術院會員。在接下來的幾年裡，他四次訪問中國。在此期間，他的作品變得更加具有裝飾性。晚年，他密切參與了明治紀念美術館的工作。
