Nicolaus Knüpfer

Nicolaus Knüpfer fue un pintor del Siglo de Oro neerlandés. Knüpfer se formó en Leipzig, donde, según Houbraken, fue aprendiz de Emanuel Nysen. Luego se mudó a Magdeburgo, donde encontró trabajo fabricando pinceles para artistas. Permaneció allí hasta 1630, y luego se trasladó a Utrecht para trabajar con Abraham Bloemaert. Vivió con él durante dos años y luego estableció su propio taller en Utrecht, donde en 1637 se convirtió en miembro visitante del Gremio de San Lucas. Trabajó en las decoraciones del castillo de Kronborg en Dinamarca y pintó figuras en los paisajes de Jan Both y Jan Baptist Weenix. Knüpfer fue un maestro exitoso, cuyos alumnos fueron grandes pintores después de él, como Jan Steen, Gabriel Metsu, Ary de Vois y Pieter Crijnse Volmarijn. Knüpfer pintó cuadros de pequeño formato con temas bíblicos, literarios y mitológicos, además de las populares obras de género de su época. Sus figuras suelen estar en poses inusuales y están pintadas con líneas fluidas y acentos blancos.
