Nicolaus Knüpfer

Nicolaus Knüpfer foi um pintor da Idade de Ouro dos Países Baixos. Knüpfer foi treinado em Leipzig, onde, segundo Houbraken, foi aprendiz de Emanuel Nysen. Em seguida, mudou-se para Magdeburgo, onde encontrou trabalho fazendo pincéis para artistas. Ele permaneceu lá até 1630 e depois mudou-se para Utrecht para trabalhar com Abraham Bloemaert. Ele morou com ele por dois anos e depois estabeleceu seu próprio estúdio em Utrecht, onde em 1637 se tornou membro visitante da Guilda de São Lucas. Ele trabalhou nas decorações do castelo de Kronborg na Dinamarca e pintou figuras nas paisagens de Jan Both e Jan Baptist Weenix. Knüpfer foi um professor bem-sucedido, cujos alunos se tornaram grandes pintores depois dele, como Jan Steen, Gabriel Metsu, Ary de Vois e Pieter Crijnse Volmarijn. Knüpfer pintou obras de pequena escala com temas bíblicos, literários e mitológicos, além das populares obras de gênero de sua época. Suas figuras estão frequentemente em poses incomuns e são pintadas com linhas fluidas e acentos brancos.
