Paulus Moreelse era un pittore olandese, principalmente di ritratti. Moreelse was born and lived most of his life in Utrecht. He was a pupil of the Delft portrait painter Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt, who had himself been a pupil of Anthonie van Blocklandt. He took a study-trip to Italy, where he received many portrait commissions. Back in Utrecht, in 1596 he became a member of the zadelaarsgilde (Saddler's guild), which then embraced the painters as well. In 1611, along with Abraham Bloemaert, he was one of the founders of a new painters' guild, called "St. Lucas-gilde", and became its first deken. Moreelse era un noto pittore di ritratti che riceveva commissioni da tutta la Repubblica Olandese. La sua opera più antica conosciuta risale al 1606. Oltre ai ritratti, dipinse anche alcune opere storiche in stile manierista e negli anni Venti del Seicento realizzò scene pastorali con pastori e pecorai. Apparteneva alla stessa generazione di Abraham Bloemaert e Joachim Wtewael e, come Wtewael, svolse un ruolo importante nella vita pubblica della loro città. La sua versione di Diana e Callisto fu incisa da Jan Saenredam. Nel 1618, quando i controrimostranti salirono al potere a Utrecht, fu espulso dal consiglio comunale (raadslid). Moreelse fu anche attivo come architetto, costruendo la Catharijnepoort di Utrecht (1626, demolita intorno al 1850) e probabilmente anche il Vleeshuis (ancora esistente) in Voorstraat dal 1637. Insegnò all'accademia di disegno di Utrecht, e tra i suoi molti allievi c'era Dirck van Baburen. Alla sua morte, fu sepolto nella chiesa Buurkerk a Utrecht.
